The only message in my Application Event Logs I see are 1202 SceCli Warning messages "Security policies were propagated with warning. 0x534 : No mapping between account names and security IDs To figure out the area id, I just created a query and included area id as one of the columns. I see at least one of my problems. Email: (never displayed)*Email is optional, but if you enter one at least make sure it is valid. the assignedTo had reference to a group that was specific to that other project and not defined in this new project. This caused TFS to misinterpret the value and of course "[Project]\Contributors" is a non existing user. Thank you!
The work item type definition file, Task.xml, does exist in the appropriate location. Thanks bro!!! I did this several times, and as I stated in my initial message, the group did exist. FYI...

Didn't at all work for me when I tried to use "[Project]\QA" as the entry. Global]\QA instead of [Global]\QA. Modify WI template and remove all references to the non-existent security group. because I'm actually using a security token and so the | (pipe) symbol won't work.
Thought it might be worth pointing out to others in the same situation. Changing them tothis "Category 1 | Subcategory 1" solved the problem!
