Once you get the partition back to having some kind of structure the programs can recognize they may be able to read the files. I'm almost positive that if you told it (even if by mistake) to install the operating system, it reformatted, which means the old partition table isn't there for testdisk to use. I tried to use the GSmart Control, but it said "Cannot Retrieve SMART data Device Open failed, or device did not return an IDENTIFY DEVICE Structure". It also seems to do that with the deeper search.
